Diablo has the option of playing multiplayer

This was particularly troubling due to the game's 24/7 online requirement. While Diablo has the option of playing multiplayer, you can complete the entire game in your own time if you want to D2R Items. There's no reason why players shouldn't have the ability to simply go about the campaign by themselves, no matter whether servers were functioning or not.

But playing offline, as it was in the first two games, was not an option, and eager players could not make advancement whatsoever as Blizzard dealt with the server issues. The issue didn't come completely out of the blue: Prior to its release, and basing off the playable Beta players had already expressed concern about the requirement to be online 24/7.

"Right now with the state it's in, it's a fundamentally damaged product" wrote John Walker for RPS. "A single-player game which doesn't pause, and if you do not quit the game, it will automatically boot you out and then stop it."

But Blizzard maintained its position and the launch disaster was ultimately a rebuke. To add to the frustration the need to always be online seemed connected to an online function, one that proved the most critical to the game's woes during its early years.

Blizzard had a problem. In the previous Diablo games, this possibility to trade items created an illicit market for loot. The players who were looking for the top gear were willing to payfor it, leaving the doors open to unscrupulous third-party sellers and price-fixing. Blizzard was aware of the risks of an unregulated, unofficial marketplace for Diablo items, and thought they could improve the experience with a legitimateand regulated one.

"The auction house came about because of the need to legitimateize third party trading , in order that players will remain in the D2R Ladder Items Buy game and conduct their business, rather than visiting third party websites, and as a result cut down on fraud, scams spamming, and the profit in hacking the gameand making dupes, etc.," former game director Jay Wilson said in an interview with DiabloII.
